Top 10 Songs of 2006

Hoo hah! Welcome one and all, to bbBear's guide to the best songs of 2006, with a smogsaboard of talent, treasures and toss. Not being a student anymore means I don't have to put up with those who think that club-crossovered-to-mainstream music is well cool, or that liking a band no one has ever heard of is, erm, cool, but the advent of the Internet and now TV programmes who promote bands you haven't heard of, it's a joyous time to discover new music. I think. The top 10 shown below are in descending order, and will provide a link to a performance of it. I would embed it into this blog post, but Youtube is funny like that and would slow the loading page down even more than it does already. And remember kids, this is MY opinion, not those of those uber-l33t kids at NME, or those arses at Student monthly. Skerm. So without further ado, lets take a peek into the songs of this year...

10. Beyonce - Irreplaceable - This one was a bit of a late entry at the 11th hour, but come on, this track is hotter than the picture of her with implants. Of course she could have another me in a minute, she's damn fine, but still, good hook and a anthem for both Kiss and Choice FM - bless 'em.

9. Muse - Knights of Cydonia - The closing track to their stonking album Black Holes and Revelations, was guided to this one by Duncan, and what a pick this was by him. Cydonia of course is the region on Mars which is believed to contain life, well we all knew that, right? 6 minutes of pure genius says Radio 1, and for once I'd be inclined to agree with them. Bastards.

8. Orson - No Tomorrow - Ahh thinking back to the good ol' days of Easter this year, revising and watching the 10 or so music channels that had this on continuous rotation. Even now, I need to scream "Turn the music up till the windows start to shatter", which is alright if your not in a supermarket surrounded by customers who don't appreciate being bellowed to. Still, holds memories which for me is more important than the entire playlist on Radio 2.

7. Busta Rhymes - Touch It - OK, the album version is a load of wank. But my reckoning, there were like, a gazillion remixes of this song, with guest verses from major players from the urban world. The best version by far is the live version at the 2006 BET awards, which incorporated all the stars from the video (such as Mary J, Papoose etc), but an added verse from Eminem. I don't remember much after watching that, except for waking up with an engorged cummy dick. Check it out.

6. Jack Johnson - Upside Down - Virgin Radio classic, taken from the 2006 film Curious George featuring a chekky curious yellow monkey with a great summery feel. Indeed it sounds a classic, but alas this young Bear hasn't had the time to watch the film, but if it's like this song, then it should be pretty dreamy. Still can't stop listening to it 2 months after discovering it - DAMN YOU VIRGIN! Not you George my curious friend, I bet you lost yours after a few months....

5. The Fray - How To Save A Life - Never underestimate the power of Scrubs. The many great things about it is its championing of new Indie bands, such as The Fray and believe it was on another show too. Anywho the song is fantastic and suited the episode brilliantly, and a cult classic. Alas I do hope this isn't the only song they release that is popular and great, and has the potential to be a big band in 2007, if only for this song. Hoo-hah!

4. Paolo Nutini - Last Request - Boy's only 18, though he is Scottish which immediately goes against him, and his Scottishness resonates through life performances (see vid for evidence), but again, simple melody, great lyrics and a singalong classic. Album is pretty decent as well, could be the UK's answer to Teddy Gieger. Yes, THE Teddy Geiger...

3. Embrace - Nature's Law - Big thx to the communist Dave for the heads-up with this one back in February of this year, absolute stonking tune which was followed by a great album, although it did lead to them doing the 2006 England World Cup song, which I don't wanna go into, as its depressing and makes me violent and purple, like a big gay Hulk. Aside form that, this too holds memories for me of uni and other things, but nevertheless deserves it's Bronze Medal position. So pop along to Dave and thank him - he will love you for it. Or love me for the increase in traffic.

2. The Feeling - Fill My Little World - Hard to seperate between this and the number 1 position, but this song was still played around 3 times a day for 8 days non stop by me, yes I played it that much. Video a bit shitty, but the longevitiy of the song made it worthwhile, which made the Feeling one of the thop bands for 2006, and with a UK tour in 2007 which I have the pleasure of attending, it all adds up to a lofty position. Simple to play too, is a singalong classic that tugs on this Bear's heartstrings and made a tear run down his face. Aww. Its that big gay Hulk thing coming back to haunt me me thinks...

1. Ne-yo - So Sick - Writer/Producer/Performer/Genius that is Shaffer Smith (or Ne-yo for short) burst onto the UK scene in 2006 with this absolute gem of song, worthy of its celestial position. A Choice FM classic, he was also championed by the station, and sold out a concert in London in January in the basis of this song and the station. Anywho the song is again about a time old classic, that he can't stop listening to the songs on the radio cos it reminds him of a girl (sound familiar? Blink 182 fans?), but nevertheless, it is.....Fucking....Awesome. Remixes aside came from Lil' Bit, Geeze, all kinda artists but no one can match the genius that is Ne-yo. Album was good too, but for me, the year will be remembered by this song, blasted out in London, all thx to Choice FM. Thx you guys!

And there we have, the top 10 songs of the year, chosen and voted for by, erm me. Special mention to Choice FM, radio station extraordinare for picking up and championing new artists such as Taio Cruz, Ne-Yo and others, without them my life would be a quagmire of sweetcorn and mash, and no one likes that. Dishonorable mentions that would never make the list include the Kooks, a cuntish student band, and Fedde Le Grand's Put Your Hands up bollocks, championed by cuntish students the world over. Good song, but when students are involved it just goes downhill.

But thankee to 2006 for the great memories and events it held, and may 2007 be another great year for music and the like, and may I wish all the readers out there and very merry xmas and new year. See you in 2007!

Guess Whose Back!!

WOOOOOOOOOO!!

Yes kids, just when you thought it was safe to come out of your living rooms, come out of the closet or just come, I return! Well, not that it's any cause to celebrate or that, but I hope someone lights a candle in my honour. Yeah yeah I know I disappeared without a trace on a little hiatus, but after reading previous posts, I thought "Hell, these kids need mental stimulation. Or oral stimulation. Who knows." As well I gotta thank my communist chum Dave, with his brand spanking new post, without him I would never have the encouragement to start this back up, although saying that, 10 miutes for a song and one line? Hmm, still thx boss!! Still not liking your communist slant, but whose perfect (aside from Zach Braff?)

Sooooo, I see it's been around 5 months since my last post. And knowing my demographic don't like reading a long piece of text but appreciate lists (who doesn't?), i'll condense my last 5 months into a list:
  • Gained (and lost) a job as a debt collector
  • Gained a job in a "retail enfant terrible" (thank the Express for that)
  • Got a DS
  • Cried over the Wii
  • Cried generally
Now wasn't that worth the 5 times a day you guys check up on here, no? I feel that looking over back through past posts, it needs panache, and guile, and other Street Fighter II characters. Now, please excuse the lack of info at this point but time is of the (vanilla) essence, plus I have reforrmatting and other projects up my sleeve, which may not be discussed next time.

So the point of this post is, I'm still alive. Much to many of your chagrins. But not only do I leave you with concert details for the fantabulous Chicks Dig Scars (my words, not their's), but, oh yes kids - the news bits are back! So check out the BBC moving to file-sharing sites, how the winner of X-Factor will be Xmas number 1, how the UK football probe targets 17 transfers, and check out Weird Al's interview with recently-divorced K-Fed - who'd wanna miss that? (Check back soon for top 10 songs of 2006! WOOO!
