10.The Hoosiers - Worried About Ray
I thank Capital FM 95.8 for this one, then Virgin as per usual jump on the wagon and claim they "found" these and champion them. Yeah right. Video a little quirky on the same musical tonage as Ghosts, but check them out - please, for me?
9. ciara - like a boy
First of 3 r&b'ish type songs (a derivative of R&B, not the word rubbish spelt badly) that was written by 6 people. 6! Don't get that with my mate Will Young, who isn't on this list this year. Hmm, anyway songs about double standards with men vs woman zzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZ ..... sorry, got bored describing it already. Listen to the song, and the beat and shake your arse to it.
8. mark ronson feat. merryweather - stop me
What do you get when you cross a song from the Smiths, the Supremes, a London Producer . Yes this song, from the album Versions, which, yet again, was played first on XFM. Are you getting the hint here people?
7.diddy feat keyshia cole - last nite
Highest charting r&b song, samples Erotic City by Prince would you believe. Or would you care? Still, differences are set between the radio edit (2 verse 2 chorus end) and the album (3 verse, 3 chorus, 6mins of geniusness), from the album Press Play. Also this co-writeen by Mario Winans - remember him? Let me Love you? No? Where have you people been these last few years?!
6. scouting for girls - not about you
Once more, a Jon Hillcock/XFM find (see a pattern here), these too are on their way to seminal greatness , or just do well with subsequnt performances at the o2 wireless festival and the daddy of all festo's, Glastonbury. If i remember rightly, and not on that glue too much.
5. Travis - Closer
NME gave the album 2/10, but then again, NME lost touch when Gazza cried in Italia 90. Stonking return for the Scottish lads, made this young man teary eyed. Haha I kid... or do I
4.low vs diamond - heart attack
Another XFM find, with the same manager as the Killers, these boys will make big waves in 2007. And not just cos they're plump and bomb in to public water. No album scheduled thus far, but with an EP out, go check it out. Yes now, before you regret it.
3. ghosts - stay the night
I will plagerise here cos i can't think of a better description than from Tin. One of the most uplifting tunes of the year so far. The lead singer has a voice reminiscent of Greg Gilbert from Delays, but I see this band making a much bigger impact as they appear more commercially friendly. This song will have you bobbing up and down for hours, well, thats if your at sea with lifejackets on.
2. Maximo Park - Our Velocity
Before Maximo Park, the best things to come out of Newcastle were Auf Widersehen, Pet, and Mr Crocodile Shoes himself Jimmy Nail. Then in 2000 came MP. However, even with thieir first album released, it took 7 years for them to release this stomper, championed by Jon Hillcock on XFM himself. What a guy, what a find for a song. Thank you Jon.
1. James Morrisson - undiscovered
Title track from the 2006 debut album, and released as a single earlier this year, it got worn out on the CD i owned, worn out on iTunes and thru Winamp. So how else do I hear such geniusness? Thats right, release it on the radio! Oh the joys of modern technology. Simple chords, powerful track and a gospel feel at the end. What more does one want, aside from the Fonz going "Heeeeeeeeeeeeey!". Still, top track of 2007, per se no argument.
So there you go, many thanks to all who compiled the list, mainly, me. And let XFM lead the way in good music for the second half of the year, holla!
